Menopause

Menopause, a natural transition for all women, can bring a wave of physical and emotional changes. Hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, and mood swings are just some of the common symptoms that can disrupt daily life. While conventional medicine offers treatment options, many women explore complementary therapies like acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine for a more holistic approach to managing menopause. Here at MRA we routinely see women seeking support for menopausal symptoms at different times of their lives.

Thin, sterile, single use needles are inserted at specific acupoints on the body. The experience is generally painless and in most circumstance is very relaxing. We keep you warm with heat packs on your feet and heat lamps if needed, we place an eye pillow over your eyes and we let you listen to gentle music or a guided relaxation meditation depending on your preference at the time.

Understanding Menopause Through a Chinese Medicine Lens

Chinese Medicine views menopause as a shift in the body's qi, particularly a decline in Kidney Yin, which is associated with hormonal balance and overall vitality. This decline disrupts the harmonious flow of qi and blood, leading to the various symptoms women experience.

Acupuncture for Relief and Harmony

Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points along meridians in the body. By stimulating these points, acupuncture aims to:

Improve sleep quality

Acupuncture can promote relaxation and improve sleep quality, which can be disrupted by hot flashes and night sweats.

What to expect during treatment

Reduce hot flashes and night sweats:

Acupuncture may help regulate the body's temperature control mechanisms, potentially reducing the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and night sweats.

Balance mood swings

Acupuncture may positively influence the nervous system, potentially reducing anxiety, irritability, and mood swings associated with menopause.

Alleviate Pain

Acupuncture can help manage joint pain and aches that can sometimes occur during menopause.

Finding Relief on Your Terms

Acupuncture and TCM offer a natural approach to managing menopause symptoms. By addressing the root imbalances and promoting overall well-being, acupuncture can be a valuable tool for navigating this transition with greater comfort and control. If you're considering acupuncture, discuss it with your doctor and find a qualified practitioner experienced in treating menopausal symptoms.

A Tailored TCM Approach

TCM practitioners take a holistic approach to menopause. In addition to acupuncture, a TCM regimen might include:

  • Dietary adjustments: Focusing on foods that nourish Kidney Yin and support hormonal balance.

  • Herbal remedies: Specific herbs may be prescribed to address individual symptoms.

  • Stress management techniques: Techniques like meditation or tai chi can promote relaxation and emotional well-being.
